Basic Brake System Components

Your vehicle has a brake pedal. That’s the part drivers most often refer to as “the brake.” Once you press it, the master cylinder can release brake fluid. The master cylinder is a holding tank, and the brake fluid is the agent that conveys the hydraulic force through the braking system. Brake hoses/lines carry the fluid to smaller cylinders. Brake calipers hold the pads. Pads, which are usually metal, make contact with rotors. Also known as discs, rotors work with the brake pads to create the friction needed for stopping. You could have drum brakes if you drive an older model or a newer one with a different system on the rear wheels. The components are the same, except that a drum (not a disc) turns inside the wheel and receives contact from a brake shoe.
