A Quick Reading Lesson
Even though our professional team will ensure that you get the tires that are appropriate for your vehicle with the features you desire, we’re happy to give you a quick lesson on how to read the sidewall of your tire. We understand that you’re more comfortable when you can follow what we’re discussing as you look at the tires. We carry major brands like Goodyear, Dunlop, Kelly, and Bridgestone. The contents of the sidewalls are the same regardless of brand. The first letter (before numbers) tells you the kind of tire you’re looking at. For instance, a “P” indicates fitness for a passenger car. It also lets you know it’s an American tire. If there’s no preceding letter, the tire is European. Following, you’ll notice a 3-digit number that expresses tire width in millimeters (from one sidewall to the other). The next two digits tell you the aspect ratio. That’s the relationship between height and width. The number indicates the percentage of the width that equals the height. The next letter deals with construction. For instance, “R” refers to a radial (cross-layered) tire. Wheel diameter in inches is provided next. Other relevant information includes the load index, speed rating, DOT certification, and tire identification information such as the place of manufacture.
