An Overview of the Angles
Although you can leave the wheel alignment process to us, we’re happy to give you an overview of the angles that might need adjustment–camber, caster, toe, and thrust. When you look at your auto from the front, the amount of tilt of the top of the wheels is camber. If they lean slightly outward, you have positive camber. If they lean in, the description is negative. While a small amount of camber aids traction, too much chews up tires. Camber is the angle that can be measured using an imaginary line through the ball joints. If you can view (or envision viewing) the wheels from above, the direction toward which they point is called the toe. Finally, the thrust is the line that might be described as extending from the center of the rear axle through the center of the automobile. This enables technicians to determine if the rear axle is properly adjusted with the car’s center and the front axle. When this measurement is off, you’re likely to struggle with handling.
