To ensure your ability to stop safely, you need to keep the forces of nature working in your favor with annual brake inspections and timely brake repair. When you apply brakes, hydraulic force allows you to exert a small amount of pressure to stop a large moving object through a principle known as Pascal’s Law. Fluid transfers from the master cylinder (which is a reservoir) through brake lines (hoses) to the cylinders at each wheel. There, the fluid force moves brake calipers and their attached brake pads into contact with rotors (the large discs to the inside of the wheels). The next scientific principle–friction–allows the automobile to slow and stop as the metal pads rub against the rotors. (Drum brakes work similarly. They’re mostly found on older models and the rear wheels of some newer vehicles. A metal brake shoe contacts the drum inside the wheel to enable the stop.) Although these are natural forces beyond our control, they are harnessed within a braking system. Keeping your brakes in good repair enables you to apply these natural forces to your advantage and make safe stops.
