Not so if you’re an NHRA driver. Did you know those tires last only a few miles? That’s right. Pit crews install a new set every 4-6 passes down the quarter-mile track. If you think that’s “nuts,” maybe you’re actually thinking about winter tires. Some manufacturers use walnut shells in rubber designed for this application, capitalizing on the shells’ natural hardness. And do you know the actual color of the rubber? Here’s a hint. It’s not black. Actually, the rubber is white. The carbon that adds strength lends its dark color.
