The first thing you can do for yourself as it relates to braking safety is to obtain regular brake inspections and repairs. You should have us check your braking system about once per year or more frequently if you drive excessive distances. Also, if you notice any problems, bring your vehicle to our attention immediately. Timely repairs keep you safer and prevent escalation into more extensive trouble. Signs of trouble include squealing during braking, lengthened stopping distances, vibration during braking, burning odors, an illuminated brake light, or pulling to the side when you apply brakes. The second thing you can do is think proactively about how to save yourself from catastrophe if your brakes fail unexpectedly. Try not to panic. Let off the accelerator and coast to a stop if you have enough time/space. Once you stop your car, don’t drive it again. Instead, call for a tow to our shop. Also, make sure you know the location of the emergency brake ahead of time. As the name suggests, this is a separate backup mechanism for emergencies that works using a cable. Additional strategies include steering away from other vehicles and large objects and pumping the brake pedal to see if you can regain some pressure.
