Basic Parts of a Tire

Clearly, all drivers know what tires are and that they’re necessary. However, with just a bit more information, you can better monitor your current set of tires and identify the appropriate time for a new set. The foundation of a tire is the belt. They’re typically made of tough materials like steel, rayon, fiberglass, etc., that are coated with rubber. Making direct contact with the road, the tread is the patterned portion of the tire. Special treads within that pattern called sipes allow your tires to deal with sand, dirt, water, or snow. Similarly, grooves are the spaces between the treads that channel water away to help prevent hydroplaning. The sidewall is, as it sounds, the side of the tire between the tread area and the rim. It is not designed to contact the road. The shoulder is the changeover area between the tread and the sidewall. Finally, the inner liner is the tough internal layer to hold the air inside. Watching these parts for damage will help you know when to bring your auto to us for tire repair (as appropriate and safe) or a tire purchase.
